Important change for multiple Google Accounts people (like me)
// July 14th, 2011 // No Comments » // Uncategorized
Today I noticed a big change in how Google was handling Multiple Accounts. After many years of peaceful coexistence, my personal Gmail and work Apps for Business accounts could not be open at the same time in separate tabs.
After some cursing and frustration, I found an important account setting that needed to be changed: (NB: have to do this in each account’s settings, and then restart the browser)
Apps: Account Settings > Personal Settings > Multiple sign-in (edit)
Personal Gmail: Account Settings > Security Settings > Multiple sign-in (edit)
The Morning After.. Oh! Canada!
// May 3rd, 2011 // No Comments » // Uncategorized
I’m feeling down and discombobulated. I went to bed after reviewing the final results around two in the morning. I had a lot of trouble getting to sleep.
It feels to me like I’ve lost parts of what I believed were valued underpinnings of my Canadian identity. It’s been a tough last few years for many, and this most recent in a string of Federal elections has Canadians swimming in a heady soup of fear, mistrust and apathy.
A strong facet of my identity as a Canadian has always been one of a more sensible, kinder, gentler nation. A more sensible place where the governance of the country ended up more -or-less reflecting a centrist consensus of the many multifaceted, multicultural, and even more moderate (dare I say polite?!) tapestry of our culture and values.
I guess that’s my way of saying that a Liberal government, kept in (a centrist) check by a strong opposition and influences on both the right and the left – is for me, essentially Canadian in its compromise and checks and balances. In the aftermath of this Federal election I see a country where this reasoned middle way, has been pretty much thoroughly discredited at the polls.
Our Parliament is now so polarized – with ever more right-wing leaning Conservatives opposed by the hodge-podge leftist spectrum of the NDP. Remember before the Alliance merged back in how the Conservatives positioned themselves as (the more centrist) Progressive Conservatives? I find Harper’s autocratic, anti-democratic, neo-con agenda and rule distressing and un-Canadian.
I hope the next four years prove my worst fears wrong – that the Harper Government loves this country as much as they love power, and will actually focus on the business of rebuilding our economy without the constant fractious distraction and shameless politicking that has marked their minority rule.
Here’s hoping.

Android = Freedom
// March 30th, 2011 // No Comments » // Uncategorized
When people ask me about Android vs. iPhone, I like to refer to Robert M. Pirsig’s Zen & the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Both the BMW & the Harley Motorcycles can make the trip. But the BMW rider looks down on the Harley, it’s not as seamless and requires maintainance and getting your hands dirty doing so. But the Harley rider knows every nut and bolt, and what they do – and can fix and modify his ride as he pleases. Both are valid choices – but which one best suits your personality? Me? I like to change my own batteries, hack my system as I please, and do not like being shackled to apple & iTunes. Android = Freedom.

There’s a certain haunting beauty to so many Canadian winter landscapes. I love the intense and striking quality of winter light. On the way home, I was enjoying the lovely, painted scenery passing by my window – so I automatically (without looking) captured a series of these striking landscape images, and edited them down to this little travelogue.

Five New Rules For Marketing
// April 13th, 2009 // No Comments » // Marketing
I have a bit of a penchant for lists, manifestos & declarations, so these Five New Rules captured my imagination.
The CMO of Unilever, Simon Clift recently warned that marketers who do not recognize that Brands are part of (and wholly subject to) the new social media landscape — and adapt their marketing — are in grave peril. In his coverage of Mr Clifts speech to Ad Age’s Digital Conference on the new state of Marketing, Jack Neff included his (excellent) preliminary draft for Ad Age’s “New Rules.”
